Today, the integration of regenerative energy sources is an important component of building services. What does this mean for MEP engineering? Schneider Gebäudetechnik from Wangen (DE) is showcasing a modern industrial building with geothermal energy and concrete core activation that demonstrates the possibilities of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and the role of open data exchange formats.

Residential fires, traffic accidents, floods… fire fighters are critical infrastructure. Therefore, they must meet special building requirements. This starts at the design stage. The local engineering company at Bach designed the sophisticated electrical and communication systems for the new construction of the fire station in Weißenfels an der Saale. Modern CAD systems are now indispensable for solving increasingly complex design tasks with high time pressure.
Not only in large projects, but also in a single residential construction, BIM can offer a solution. This is proven by Schlepers Installatechniek in Markelo (NL), where an additional two-storey residential unit including a small attic is built on a private property.
Start with BIM today

Perfect insight into the object to build, minimizing the error costs, reducing construction costs, shortening the construction time and optimal use of data – from design and construction to the operational phase. More and more companies in the construction sector are discovering the benefits of BIM and dare to make the transition to the new way of designing and cooperation. This is not only because clients are requesting it, but also because companies themselves want to move forward.
How to reduce the risk of errors when engineering, designing and constructing buildings? Engineering company Zeisig shows how to do it by applying a precise, cross-discipline MEP design method to a new residential building in the St. Johannis district in Nuremberg, Gemany. Using the example of the challenging static piping system, practical solutions from digital MEP engineering are presented.
Paul Daugalis, Managing Director of the Lithuanian company ‘Hugaas Engineering UAB’, is following a visionary strategy: offering a one stop shop for a complete integrated asset lifecycle management of buildings. This approach has earned Hugaas Engineering the 2016 Lithuanian Open BIM Award in the overall category ‘Best integrated BIM project’ as well as in the sub-category ‘Best MEP BIM project’ for their new Hugaas head office Mooya Fellesbygg.
It seems that construction design professionals quickly jumped on the fast moving train of Building Information Modeling (BIM). However, some in the industry still do not consider the BIM modeling process a higher standard. Therefore, we decided to make up our own mind and gather more experience as to why BIM has not made it into the top design league. Yet!
Cidade Mall, located in the centre of Belo Horizonte, has gone through three expansions since 1991. This year it will undergo a complete retrofit including aesthetic changes. All facilities inside the building will also be modernized. In total there are six floors of shopping area resulting in 62,400 m² of built surface on a plot of 7,500 m².
‘Calculations can be performed more accurately’
To provide even faster emergency services, the Fire Department Gooi en Vecht shifted to 24-hour shifts earlier this year. Because the old location is too small and no longer meets the current standards, the fire station has been temporarily moved to a location elsewhere in the city. The old building will soon be demolished and replaced by new buildings.
Caxias do Sul, a Brazilian town in the state of Rio Grande do Sul with about 400,000 inhabitants, is rapidly expanding and internationalizing. The city is the second largest center of the metal mechanic sector in the country. Located near the city center is the Unimed Hospital. It is currently undergoing an expansion process. At the moment the hospital occupies 12,000 square meters of built area, the new building area will be 32,000 square meters in a nine-story tower, with a conventional reinforced concrete structure.
Recently the construction of the community and sports center has started in Nibbixwoud (NL). In 2016, this new accommodation will become the place where villagers meet and provide facilities for sports, weddings and funerals. The design of 3.000 m² GLA includes a seven-meter high sports hall, hospitality, meeting rooms and an auditorium.
Vanderlande Industries B.V., a supplier of conveyor systems for internal logistics, is significantly expanding. To accommodate the growing number of employees at the company in Veghel in the future, a new office building of 19.500 m² is designed at a visible location along the A50 highway, directly next to its current location.
Niverplast B.V. from Rijssen, a company that produces and develops packaging machines and complete packaging lines in particular for the food industry, has bought 1,9 acres at the business area 't Lochter 3 in Hellendoorn.
Opposite the head office of Voortman Steel Machinery in Rijssen, an ultramodern Experience Center opened last year. The latest innovations and developments of Voortman are demonstrated to the public at this location.
INPrediais, one of the first DDS-CAD users in Brazil, has successfully demonstrated the added value of BIM to the Brazilian construction industry.
